Methane and nitrous oxide emissions from shallow windrow piles for biostabilisation of municipal solid waste

چکیده

Shallow windrow piles were applied as a low-cost option for biostabilisation of municipal solid wastes (MSW) prior to their utilization refuse-derived fuel (RDF). A considerable amount greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be emitted during the MSW, especially when in operation under high moisture conditions such there are tropical Asia. This study investigated emission methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from shallow – with heights 0.5–1.0 m stabilization MSW at full-scale facility Thailand. Measurements CH4, CO2, N2O using static-chamber method revealed spatial heterogeneity characteristics all zones different waste ages. Peak observed after four months biostabilisation. The average ranged 7.33 26.88 g m−2 d−1 (14.86 d−1, on average). CH4 generation-rate constant was within range 3.3 4.0 yr−1, which is higher than that reported about 2.20–3.50 yr−1 deep pile (3.5–4.0 height). distribution 4.51–199.14 mg t−1dry wt.d−1 (6.6–111.7 d−1), similar those previously studied landfill operations. technique technology developing countries, where land area available.Implications: biological treatment countries available. evaluated pile. findings suggest rates varied spatially ages zones. Higher generation rate derived window compared factors derived.

Methane Production from Municipal Solid Waste

Introduction Archaeological investigations of landfills have revealed that biodegradable wastes can be found — virtually intact — 25 years after burial. We know that landfills contain bacteria with the metabolic capability to degrade many of the materials that are common components of municipal refuse. The persistence for decades of degradable materials in the presence of such organisms appears...

Methane and nitrous oxide emissions from municipal wastewater treatment - results from a long-term study.

Methane and nitrous oxide emissions from a fully covered municipal wastewater treatment plant were measured on-line during 16 months. At the plant under study, nitrous oxide contributed three-quarters to the plant's carbon footprint, while the methane emission was slightly larger than the indirect carbon dioxide emission related to the plant's electricity and natural gas consumption. This contr...

Estimation of methane and nitrous oxide emissions from Indian livestock.

Greenhouse gas (GHG; methane and nitrous oxide) emissions from enteric fermentation and manure management of Indian livestock were estimated from the last two Indian livestock census datasets (2003 and 2007) using IPCC Tier 2 (2006) guidelines. The total annual GHG emissions from Indian livestock increased in 2007 compared to the year 2003 with an annual growth rate of 1.52% over this period. T...
